There was a small percentage of citizens that were wealthy and kept the economy moving in this time. However, they maintained their wealth by the majority selling their goods and services at meager prices.

Charlemagne in the ninth century invented a system where a pound of sterling silver would be divided into 20 parts, and each of these parts was divided into twelve further parts, making 240 parts in all. This was the system in England from the ninth century to 1965: twelve pennies to the shilling, twenty shillings to a pound of silver. Other kinds of coins were in circulation: gold coins called ducats (originally from Venice) were particularly well-known.
