Open source means that the source code is available free of charge. That does not mean however that you have any other rights in connection to it.
GNU GPL insures that a software is "Free" (as in Freedom), making sure that users not only have the right to see the source code, but modify it in any way they like it as long as they license the modifications under the GPL, too. See the link to Free Software vs. Open Source for more details.
Open GNU is a free software system that allows users to adapt the software to specific parameters. Applications like Openoffice are part of the Open GNU system.
Unix is NOT open source, it is proprietary copyrighted code owned by AT&T and you must purchase a license to use it, as you do on Windows and Mac OS X.However both Linux and GNU are open source OSs with equivalent functionality to Unix.
Open source ssoftware is computer software that is available in source code from the source code and certain other rights normally reserved for copy right holders are provided under a software licence that permits users to study, change, improve and at times also to distribute the software. open source is a very often developed in a public, collaborative manner. open source software is the most prominent example of open source developed and often compared to technically defined user generated content or (legally defined) open content movement.
GNU/Linux(same thing) There's: Red hat, Ubuntu, LFS(Linux from scratch) and many others
Open-source software is found and hosted on a number of sites. Sourceforge.net is probably the most popular. GNU Savannah is another. Google Code is a fairly recent alternative that also hosts only free software.
The GNU Project.
Richard Stallman intended GNU to be a full-fledged operating system, but without a kernel, he couldn't do it. At least until he discovered Linus Torvalds' Linux kernel, thus the GNU/Linux (or GNU+Linux) operating system was born.As far as open-source projects are involved, both are open-source projects. And you don't have to only use the Linux kernel with GNU, as there's the GNU/Hurd project, and then the ever-popular Android (runs on a modified Linux kernel, the remaining are developed by Google)
Check out open source sites, such as FreshMeat or SourceForge, or the GNU project.

A wildebeest is a type of antelope found in Africa, whereas a gnu (short for "gnu's new unix") is a Unix-like operating system developed by the Free Software Foundation. The term "gnu" refers to both the animal and the operating system, but they are unrelated in terms of their nature and characteristics.
