In Arthur Miller's "The Crucible," the other villagers are accused of witchcraft primarily by Abigail Williams and the other girls who were caught dancing in the forest. To deflect blame from themselves and avoid punishment, they begin naming others in the community, claiming those individuals were in league with the devil. This creates a wave of hysteria, leading to numerous wrongful accusations and trials. The atmosphere of fear and paranoia allows these accusations to escalate, often driven by personal vendettas and societal pressures.
At the beginning of Act I of "The Crucible," Tituba, the enslaved woman of Reverend Parris, is on the stand. She is accused of witchcraft and is pressured to confess to her supposed involvement in witchcraft and to name other supposed witches in the community. The atmosphere is charged with fear and hysteria, as the townspeople are eager to scapegoat others to protect themselves.

In Arthur Miller's "The Crucible," when Mary Warren is accused of being a witch, she initially succumbs to fear and pressure, aligning herself with the other girls and the hysteria surrounding the witch trials. She tries to defend herself by claiming that she was merely following the other girls' lead and that she is not a witch. However, under immense pressure from Abigail Williams and the group, she ultimately wavers and is coerced into recanting her earlier testimony against the accusations, further entrenching herself in the chaos of the trials. This reflects the intense societal pressure and the hysteria that drives individuals to betray their morals for self-preservation.

The empty crucible is heated AND WEIGHED, so that you can drive off any moisture and/or other particles that might add to the weight of the empty crucible. You will eventually weigh the crucible again at the end of the experiment to determine the weight (mass) of some compound. Thus, it is important to have a correct "starting mass" of the crucible.
