Expectations were different. Most girls would grow up to marry someone, have children and keep house. Most boys would grow up to learn a trade and work very hard to support a family. Girls were taught the skills they could be expected to use in the job they were expected to do, and boys were taught the skill that they could be expected to use.

Why were these expectations different? Technology. Keeping house was a full-time job. Just you try keeping a house heated and lit by fires clean, washing things without a machine to do it, cooking on a fire, making all of your own and your children's clothes, keeping track of the household money, shopping, gardening, and possibly running a business on the side, all without any electricity. Someone had to do all these things and it made sense for it to be the person who might at the same time have to care for an infant.
