Of course, definitions of tragedy and comedy can shift from time to time and place to place, but the main questions you need to ask are: 1. Who are the main characters? and 2. How are they doing at the end of the story? If at the end of the story, the main characters are doing really badly compared to how things were at the beginning, then it's a tragedy. E.g. Oedipus starts out as king with a nice wife and ends up not king, with his wife dead, his eyes gouged out, and totally disgusted with himself. Macbeth starts out as a famous warrior beloved by everyone and ends with his head on a pole because everyone hates him. Willy Loman starts out believing himself to have been a success in life, and ends up committing suicide because he finds out that he is in every way a failure. You get the drift. In a comedy, on the other hand, the main characters are at least as well off as they were in the beginning, maybe better. Often comedies start out with everything all right, then things get bad, but not too bad, because something will happen to make them all right.
