The Vietnamese peasants hated the Strategic Hamlets Program for several reasons. First, ancestor worship was very important to the mostly Buddhist villagers. Relocation took them far away from their ancestor's resting places. Second, there was widespread corruption with the program, and although the peasants were promised pay for their work, officials often stole their wages. Third, security was a joke since the forces couldn't always be readily reached, leaving villagers to fend for themselves.
