It started out without any borders around the states but then people wanted to have territories so they spilt up the land into borders that the other people couldn't pass because it was "theirs"
There is a wonderful program discussing this topic, which I just recently watched again on the History International Channel - if I am not mistaken. This documentary presents various factors, from the conflict over gold mining to geographic features to politics as playing a role in the "configuration" of our U.S. map.

A Certificate of Authority is issued by each state's Secretary of State office. This certifies that an agency is approved to conduct business in a specified state. Once a Certificate of Authority to do business has been issued by the Secretary of State, compliance requirements must be met such as frequent and periodic reporting to the Secretary of State and/or Department of Revenue offices for the specified state.
The curriculum is set by the state and the state follows the federal education department rules. Colleges generally have mission statements, but not elementary, middle, or high schools. The state curriculum provides a framework for each grade and each subject. It tells the teacher exactly what is to be taught and the objectives to be followed. These are very specific and exact and the textbooks are geared to the frameworks. When teachers are evaluated they are evaluated using the framework for their grade level curriculum or subject matter. Lesson plans must reflect the exact objective that is being used from the framework. The objectives are numbered to make it easy to put as part of the lesson plan and each teacher must state an objective for each lesson each day. The school is also required for each teacher to have an outcome based curriculum. This is measured with benchmarks, observations, and testing. Each year each teacher must report what percentage of their students can pass for the year and they are held to this standard. Many people think schools willy nilly pick what to teach but it is very much a set process and requirements have to be met by the schools and teachers for the state.

It was a circular shape !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Each state can be known by it's geometric shape. The state, Kansas' geometric shape looks almost like a rectangular shape.
The state of matter characterized by definite shape and volume is solid. In a solid, molecules are closely packed together and have a fixed position relative to each other, which gives the substance a defined shape and volume.
gaseous state.
Washington State is a rectangular shape. The western top portion of Washington State is a hook shape. To the west of Washington State is the Pacific coast.
They kept them in check with city states and each city state had a lord
In solid state, molecules vibrate in fixed positions but cannot move past each other easily, leading to a definite shape and volume. In liquid state, molecules can move past each other but are still close together, allowing the substance to take on the shape of its container while maintaining a definite volume. In gas state, molecules move freely and independently of each other, filling the entire space of the container they are in with no definite shape or volume.
When the state changes, it won't be the same shape because there are different properties for each of the states, e.g. liqiud can fill any shape but moves to the bottom, solid can't move and gas fills any shape. It will have the same amount of substance because it is still the same thing, just in a different state.
Solid: Particles are closely packed together in a fixed arrangement, have a definite shape and volume, and vibrate in place. Liquid: Particles are close together but can move past each other, taking the shape of their container. They have a definite volume but not a definite shape. Gas: Particles are far apart, move freely, and fill the entire space of their container. They have neither a definite shape nor volume.
The liquid state of matter has volume but no definite shape.
The designs of the State Quarters were approved by each state, with minimal restrictions on what could be included, as long as the detail would show up from the dies.
What state of matter like a solid has a definite shape
A liquid state will fit into a container of any shape and size, as it takes the shape of its container.
