They worked jobs to get money so they could buy food, clothing, shelter, entertainment and so on. Some folks were ridiculously rich but most had to sweat it out in some joe job. What do you mean, it sounds familiar?

The usual way. They had jobs, made money, ate, drank, slept, made babies. In a married couple, only the husband usually had an outside job as running a household was full-time work, especially if there were kids to be cared for as well. Rich people, of course, could afford to get other people to do that kind of stuff for them, so they could spend more time politicking.
