Shakespeare had to trim and change all of his plays to conform to the dictates of the government censors under both Elizabeth and James. However, James was much more lenient in this way. The censors under James did insist that a scene in part 2 of Henry VI which shows Jack Cade knighting Dick the Butcher be cut, as it might be construed as a criticism of James's policy of distributing knighthoods to anyone who could pay for them.

James I appears to have been quite fond of them. We have records of the Master of the Revels, Edward Tilney, which show that James requested Shakespeare plays on a number of occasions.

Nobody knows for sure which of Shakespeare's early plays was the first, nevermind when it was first performed.
