Some people say that the death of his son Hamnet influenced his plays because since then he wrote tragic stories. But it isn't true. Hamnet died in 1596, and the plays that Shakespeare wrote from 1596 to 1600 were some of his most joyous and exuberant: Henry IV, Parts 1 and 2, The Merry Wives of Windsor, Much Ado About Nothing, Henry V, As You Like It, Twelfth Night. Only Julius Caesar is a tragedy. Then around 1600, something happened and he started to write tragedies and darker comedies.

We don't know why he had this change, but it certainly wasn't the death of his son. Hamnet's death did not appear to affect his playwriting at all.
