A few years after Shakespeare's death, in 1623, two of Shakespeare's actor friends, John Hemmings and Henry Condell, who had been friends and colleagues of his, honored his memory by collecting most of his plays (some 36 of them) into a published book. Some editions of about half of these plays had been published during his lifetime, but that book, now known as the First Folio, is primarily responsible for making his plays available to subsequent generations. This Folio was added to and re-printed several times over the centuries, until the present day, so that we now have a canon of something like 38 plays.

How did my plays get handed down to you?

Your plays were handed down through a combination of oral tradition and written documentation. Initially, they may have been performed and shared within communities, allowing them to be passed on through storytelling. Over time, they were likely transcribed and preserved in manuscripts, ensuring their survival through various historical contexts. These texts were then collected and published, making them accessible to future generations.
