It isn't the shape of the theatres so much as the shape of the stages. Actors who have been trained to act on proscenium stages (the kind where only one side faces the audience) are trained to keep at least half of their faces toward the audience whenever speaking, because it is the only way to be seen, and because without electronic help, it's the only way to be heard. For a director to direct an actor to speak on a proscenium stage when he is facing upstage is extremely clumsy and incompetent.

On a thrust stage, the kind of three-sided stage that they had in Shakespeare's time, and which has come back in popularity in the late 20th century, however, an actor is faced with the fact that whenever he speaks, he has his back turned to someone. The trick is to keep moving so that you don't show your back to the same people all the time. It's a different acting style.

Another effect has to do with scenery. Proscenium stages allow you to have all kinds of scenery hiding in the wings and the flies. Because the view is essentially two-dimensional, extraordinarily complex set-pieces can be inserted behind the actors. This was the fashion throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth century. It was only in the twentieth with the advent of complex lighting that directors thought about creating sets with light rather than with wood and canvas.

On a thrust stage, however, complicated sets are impossible, for two reasons: first, there is noplace to conveniently store them where the audience cannot see them, and second, and most importantly, because the stage is three-dimensional, they get in the way of the audience's sight-lines, so the audience cannot see the actors.

How were the social classes divided in the theatre in Shakespeare's time?

The social classes in the theatre were arranged so the richer, higher class people had the better veiw and more comfortable seats. As the theatres in shakespeares day were usually circular in shape this meant that the better seats were higher up. The poorer seats were in the open air space in the middle or the theatre with no seats unlike the richer classes above them.

What kind of theaters existed in shakespeares day?

Open air public theatres existed in Shakespeares day. They were built of wood, and were circular in shape. They had about three tiers of covered seating, and an open yard in the middle for the 'lower class' to stand and watch the play. They were called groundlings because they stood on the ground, and were only charged a penny to do so. The stage protruded from one side of the circle and into the yard. 'Upper class' theatre visitors could even pay to sit at the side stage to watch the play. There were two main theatres in London during Shakespeare's time, called The Rose and The Globe. Shakespeare predominantly played in The Globe. For more information, I would search 'Shakespeare's Globe'. A reproduction has been built in London which is meant to be based on the designs for the original Globe Theatre. The original burnt down in the Great fire of London in 1666.

Why were Elizabethan theatres round?

Not all Elizabethan Theatres were round, although the most famous ones were. These included the Theatre, Curtain, Rose, Globe, Swan and Hope. The reason for the round shape is the same as the reason it is used when building sports stadia--to have all of the audience the same distance from the action. In square theatres (like the Red Bull and Fortune) the seats in the corners would have had a poorer view.
