Fashions changed through Shakespeare's life as they have a tendency to do at all times. With some variations, women wore an undershift covered with a chemise. Over this they would wear a heavy floor-length gown. The bosom was flattened with a panel called a stomacher, a triangular part of the gown which extended down to the crotch. The skirt was made very full with petticoats, and later on with panniers on the hips which made the women seem to be three times as wide at the hips as they really were. Sleeves were very full and always came to the wrist. Often a jacket was worn over the gown with slashed sleeves so the sleeve beneath could be seen.
