that she might have a different father
Don Pedro says that he will propose the marriage of Claudio and Hero to Leonato her father and get his consent. This he does. Claudio is grumpy because he has been fooled by Don John into believing that Don Pedro wanted Hero for himself.

Hero and Ursula tell Beatrice that Benedick loves her and is pining for her. They also mention that Benedick looks pale and lovesick because of his feelings for Beatrice. This revelation is what changes Beatrice's mind about Benedick and makes her realize that he may have genuine feelings for her.

In Act 1 Scene 1:Don Pedro: I think this is your daughter.Leonato: Her mother hath many times told me so.Benedick: Were you in doubt, sir, that you asked her?Leonato: Signor Benedick, no, for then you were a child.Don Pedro: You have it full, Benedick. We may guess by this what you are, being a man.Leonato jokes that his wife has many times told him that Hero is his daughter, and Benedick asks why he bothered asking her. Did Leonato suspect his wife of infidelity? No, says Leonato, because Benedick was only a child then. That is to say, since his wife could not be unfaithful with Benedick, she could not have been unfaithful with anyone. And Don Pedro confirms the implication, saying that now they know what kind of man Benedick is.Of course none of them are serious about any of this.

Two watchmen
In Act 1 Scene 1, Don Pedro first hears about Claudio's love for Hero from Benedick. Don Pedro replies that "the lady is very well worthy." To this Benedick responds "That I neither feel how she should be loved nor know how she should be worthy, is the opinion that the fire cannot melt out of me: I will die in it at the stake." He goes on a few lines later to a general condemnation of women, not Hero particularly, ending with the line "I will live a bachelor".
