Julius Cesar was a great Roman military figure. Ironically, he is not the main figure in the play. Brutus has a much more significant role in Shakespeareâ??s play. Cesar, however, holds a more significant status within the work as he is expected to be king. Brutus did not despise Cesar personally, but was the only one who believed the public would benefit from Cesarâ??s death.
That they both challenge an earthly power and end up committing suicide but that one is by disobeying a law and the other by killing a person is a way of comparing and contrasting Antigone in "Antigone" by Sophocles (495 B.C.E. - 405 B.C.E.) and Brutus in "Julius Caesar" by William Shakespeare (Baptized April 26, 1564 - April 23, 1616).
Specifically, Theban Princess Antigone and Roman Senator Brutus (June 85 B.C.E. - October 42 B.C.E.) respectively challenge the rules of King Creon and Julius Caesar (July 13, 100 B.C.E. - March 15, 44 B.C.E.). Both end up being sentenced to death, before which they acknowledge the role of Zeus the chief god in life and death. But Antigone hangs herself rather than starve to death for burying her brother Polyneices. Brutus takes his life rather than face the wrath of Caesar's nephew.

Brutus was a protégé of Caesar, and was considered to be one of his closest friends. That is why Caesar said "Et tu, Brute?" (What? You too, Brutus??) when Brutus stabbed him, and why Antony calls Brutus Caesar's angel.
Brutus's purpose was to control the crowd as was Anthony's. Brutus began his speech with a hostile crowd against him as a murderer of the popular Julius Caesar.

Brutus did not do anything to convince Caesar.
Brutus does kill Caesar.
Caesar was a mentor to Brutus and some historians think Brutus may have been his son. Brutus will be involved in the murder of Caesar.

Brutus and Caesar were good friends, or so Caesar thought. Brutus killed Caesar. He stabbed him around 2 dozen times. He had help of course, but he did the deed.
