Use the controller plugs located on the top of the console. You have to open the 2nd part of the top, the first has cards slots. It is not obvious at first and the manual doesn't say where they are. I just started pulling on the top and saw there was a sencond lid up there. Make sure you plug the mat into the first one, I heard some people couldn't get the mat to work if the plugged it into the wrong one.
Newer Wii models (Black) does not have support fore GameCube controllers which happens to be where you are supposed to plug the dance mat into.
