Helena is suffering from serious self-esteem issues. She believes herself to be unworthy of his love, and so expects to be abused. She compares herself to a dog: "I am your spaniel, and, Demetrius, the more you beat me, I will fawn on you." On the other hand, when Demetrius, under the influence of the love potion, protests that he loves her, she complains that he is making fun of her. She cannot believe that she is worthy of such adoration.
It's hard to believe that her marriage to Demetrius will be a happy one. She is the classic abuse victim, and he has a nasty streak that could turn him into an abuser, especially since Helena wants and expects him to become one.

It depends... Is it yourself or someone else you are referring to? Physical abuse can be very apparent. Mental abuse on the other hand is harder to recognize. It's all in how it effects you personally. You can get into a verbal fight with someone and if there words effect you in such a manner where emotional pain or suffering occurs, without and real motive or backing behind it,it is definitely a sign of mental abuse.
For a parent it is so hurtful to have a child who has resented you or don't respect you at all. Children would react that way either the parent is also verbally or physically abusive as well. O could be if your child felt betrayed of the parents actions, during a divorce or spousal abuse. All actions have a cause, it is better to establish a good relationship with your child while growing up to avoid abuse, resentment even abandonment in your family.

Drugs can lower a person's ability to resist the abuser, because it makes the brain unable to react in a normal way and to think of a plan for escape if one is possible, which isn't possible in all cases, of course. Drugs lower inhibitions and may make a person less resistant to abuse because of lowered inhibitions.
There is no easy way to approach someone whom you think is a victim of abuse. All you can really do is offer them your ear and support, to make them feel comfortable in confiding with you. If you ask directly if they are abused and they deny it, you can't keep pushing for them to admit it, as that becomes a form of abuse and you'll loose their trust. Do not over-react, let them know you're a safe person to confide in and then be patient.
If your words are interpreted as rude, a customer can get frustrated very quickly. Good customer service requires patience, a kind and helpful attitude, and the ability to listen and react calmly.

You can't do anything directly since you are a step parent, presumably their step mother. You need to bring some pressure on their father to take charge of the situation and arrange a consultation with an attorney who specializes in family law. The lawyer can review that situation and explain the options. The situation has an extremely negative impact on their lives and must be addressed. Improvements in the girls' environment must be made as soon as possible.
Most children react in a sad way they may become grumpy and maybe feel ill at some point but this is only in the bad cases! Not so bad cases they will just be quiet and tearful, they may call child line if they just want a chat with someone without being smacked or anything like that!
