The role of fathers has always been important to the raising of children. However, families like that of William and Anne Shakespeare where the father was frequently away from home at his job, laid a lot of the burden of raising the children on the mother. Married women rarely worked away from home, unlike today, and so spent a lot of time with the kids. In families where the father worked at or near his home, such as the family of John and Mary Shakespeare (William's parents), all members of the family contributed both to the family business and to the home. This was also true of farm families. In families of this type the father's role in raising the children was much more significant. And in all cases the family income flowed primarily from the husband and father, who could own businesses and take paying jobs as married women could not. Single-parent families, usually the result of the death of one or other of the parents, were difficult to sustain because of the limited moneymaking opportunities for women (brewing, running an inn, or needlework were the leading sources of employment), and the enormous amount of work involved in running a household. Hired help was required, and remarriage was the most attractive plan for both widows and widowers.
