It depends on what product the salesman is selling and what "rules" are in place in the area. Door to door salesmen usually sell on behalf of another company (the client). So the client can set the hours during which salesmen may solicit sales.
I used to sell a telecoms service as a door to door salesman in the UK and we had virtually no restrictions (we were only limited by our call center which registered all the sales, which closed at 10pm). However there may be regulations in place in certain areas. There are some "no cold calling" zones where it is illegal to sell door to door at any time.
My colleagues who were "selling" charity subscriptions could only work until 6pm or something like that - I think this was because of some government regulations.
