Modern dance emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a reaction against the rigid techniques and formalities of classical Ballet. Pioneers like Isadora Duncan and Martha Graham sought to express emotional and individual experiences through movement, emphasizing freedom of expression, natural body movements, and innovative choreography. This new form of dance incorporated various styles and influences, ultimately leading to a diverse range of expressions that continue to evolve today. Modern dance challenged societal norms and embraced a more personal, interpretive approach to performance.
