In William Shakespeareâ??s King Lear, the title character is betrayed by both his children as well as his vanity. Wanting to retire, an aged and addled King decides he will divide his Kingdom among his three daughters. However, first he devises a silly game in which the daughters must compete to show how much they love him. His two daughters, who donâ??t love him at all, are very good liars who convince him that they love him more, making his good daughter, who refuses to play this game, look bad. So she gets disinherited and the deceptive ones gain the kingdom. As time and events pass, Lear eventually learns the folly of his actions.

∙ 13y agoBad retirement planning, mostly. Lear wants to be treated like a king and to receive all the benefits of being king, without acting like one. His expectation that everything is going to arrange itself for his benefit is deluded. Kings, if they are to be worth the name, need to be able to detect insincere flattery and recognize constructive criticism, and need to act with dignity for the benefit of the kingdom, rather than indulging in selfish debauchery with a hundred knights.
