The Modern Globe Theatre is not smaller than the original, although its capacity is listed at 1500 when the original could hold 3000. The difference is fire regulations. Today's fire regulations forbid that kind of crowding. They also required the builders of the modern globe to have more exits than the original. The thatching is treated with a fireproof chemical and there are water jets in the thatch to extinguish any possible blaze. The walls also contain fire-resistant materials.

No doubt they had in mind that fire destroyed the first Globe after which the modern Globe is modeled. It is also worth noting that although it caught fire during a performance, the overlarge audience were able to exit from the one door without injury to anyone.
