In Romeo and Juliet, women have minor roles in the society.

They are expected to be obedients and followers of men in their families. For example, Lady Capulet and Lady Montague can do nothing to stop their husbands' anger to their villians. Lady Montague doesn't care much about the feud between two families as she doesn't want Romeo involved in the fighting.

Juliet's charateristic is a clear example of women's role. She has little guidance and help from her family. She is expected to marry Paris as her father decided. The death of her at the end can be known as a severe punishment as she argue the fate.

There are four women who are actually portrayed on stage in Romeo and Juliet: Mrs. Montague, Mrs. Capulet, the Nurse and Juliet. Each one of them is different. Mrs. Montague we hardly see at all; from what we see she seems to be maternal and protective. Mrs. Capulet, on the other hand, barely knows her daughter and appears much more fond of her nephew Tybalt. She is interested in social status, and not particularly invested in knowing the truth about anything. She wholeheartedly supports the feud. There is a bitterness and anger in her which is a little sad. The Nurse is a lower-class person, earthy and not very intellectual. She is maternal and protective, but she is focused on material pleasures and the pursuit of money. She does not allow scruples to get in the way of those pursuits. Juliet is a teenager, barely a woman at all. She is idealistic, passionate, intelligent and very courageous, although these characteristics become clear only as the play develops. As she matures she learns that there is a price to be paid for all your decisions in life, and sometimes a very high price. These are four extremely different women, and all except Mrs. Montague, who we hardly see, are complex and fully realized.

Who were the first people to play Romeo and Juliet?

The first two people to play Romeo and Juliet were Richard Burbage and some teenaged boy whose name we don't know for sure but might have been Robert Goffe. Burbage played Romeo and the boy played Juliet. This took place about 1595. The first woman Juliet was Mary Saunderson in 1662, playing opposite Henry Harris. The first woman to play Romeo was Charlotte Cushman, an American, in 1845, playing opposite her sister Susan. Romeo and Juliet first appeared on film in 1908, in three different films: one with Mario and Maria Casserini made in Italy, one with Saul Panzer and Florence Laurence (the first film star) made in the USA, and one with Geoffrey Tearle and Mary Malone made in Britain. The first talking film of the play was made in 1936 with Norma Shearer and Leslie Howard. IMdb lists thirty-nine films with the characters of Romeo and Juliet before Zeffirelli's 1968 film, so that film was not even close to being close to the "first" Romeo and Juliet in any possible sense.
