Well, it really depends what you are analysing. What you want to do is to go through whatever it is and look for things that are not what they seem. Like, if it were Superman, you could talk about how Clark Kent seems like one kind of guy but really is another. You can also look at how people have a public persona and a private persona. Sometimes people create an image of themselves that they show to the public which is different from what they are really like.
Appearance and reality can be an issue with the whole world, too. Take the Matrix, for example. The world looked like one thing but it was really another.
So, once you have identified things that might be appearance/reality issues, you can then see if there is any kind of pattern to them. Does it appear in the work that we ought to hide things, or does the difference between appearance and reality lead to disaster in the work you are looking at?
