The literary device used is dramatic irony. The audience knows that the speaker is condemning himself to exile.
Oedipus, not knowing what he did, declared that the murderer of King Laius would be killed or exiled. He also prayed that the murderer would live a life of wretchedness.
In Oedipus Rex, Oedipus learns of a prophecy that says he will marry his mother and kill his father. He flees the town to try to prevent it from coming true but he doesn't know that the people he just left weren't his real parents. On his way to a new town, Oedipus kills his real father and ends up marrying his mother (not knowing they were his real parents). The conflict is that he tells his people that the king's murderer needs to be killed to avenge his death and remove the plague. Little does he know that he is the murderer...
because oedipus is a gerendofile, however not knowing it. as he married his mother
That they have not been in each other's presence since infancy is the reason why Jocasta and Oedipus are married without knowing that they are mother and son in "Oedipus Rex" by Sophocles (495 B.C.E. - 405 B.C.E.).Specifically, Theban Queen Jocasta gives her three-day-old infant son Oedipus over to her most trusted servant to kill. Unbeknownst to her, the servant hands Oedipus over to a Corinthian shepherd who gives Oedipus to the childless Corinthian royal couple. Mother and son therefore lead their lives without knowing of each other's existence.
Oedipus's fatal flaw are his quality traits. Some examples are his arrogance, ignorance of not knowing of what he has done, and curiosity for finding out the truth. These things create his fatal flaw which lead to his fate.

Some common literary devices used in Sophocles' play "Oedipus Rex" include dramatic irony, foreshadowing, and symbolism. Dramatic irony is prevalent as the audience knows Oedipus' fate before he does. Foreshadowing is seen through prophecies that hint at future events, while symbolism is often used to represent larger themes, such as blindness symbolizing ignorance.

There was no murderer. The colonel was spooked by Henry and fell in disgust and killed himself. The mistress had fainted not knowing Henry was still alive disformed.

In "Oedipus Rex," Jocasta asks Oedipus to stop if he has any concern for his life or for her suffering. At this point, she has guessed the identity of Oedipus and doesn't want him to experience the pain of knowing he has slept with his own mother. The knowledge that she has children with her son is too much for Jocasta, and she hangs herself.
That the truth will destroy the entire family is the reason why Jocasta is skeptical about Oedipus' insistence on knowing the truth in "Oedipus Rex" by Sophocles (495 B.C.E. - 405 B.C.E.).Specifically, Theban Queen Jocasta is conciliatory and escapist. She likes to avoid conflict or nip it in the bud. She thinks that some things are better off not being known or looked into. She particularly thinks this way in the case of news that rocks the palace with scandals of criminal acts and immoral behavior.
Oedipus was the son of Laius, King of Thebes and Jocasta. He was sent to die on a hillside. A shepard rescued him and he was adopted by King Polybus of Corinth and his wife. An oracle said that Oedipus would kill his father and marry his mother. So he left his adopted home and went to Thebes. He met his real father, and not knowing, killed him. Then he riddled with the Sphinx and won the throne of Thebes. He married his mother without knowing and had four children. When the truth became known, his mother hung herself and Oedipus blinded himself.
Yes: knowing that Apollo has sent a plague upon Thebes that will only go away when the murderer of king Laius is found, he does everything he can to find him. When he learns that HE is the murderer and that, on top of that, Laius was his father and that he has taken his own mother to wife, he is horrified to the very marrow. When he finds that his mother/wife has killed herself, he puts out his eyes that they might no longer see all the evil he had suffered and done, and that the persons he should never have met or might have liked to get to know, would from that moment be shrouded in darkness.
