The idea is that Juliet will take a drug that will make her look like she is dead. By the burial customs of the day, they would not embalm her, bury her or cremate her, but lay her out on a slab in the family vault. She will wake up 42 hours after taking the drug. In the meantime, Romeo will sneak back into Verona in time to be there when she wakes up and leave for Mantua with her.

It's a harebrained scheme and the delicate timing was sure to go wrong.
