A Scrim (in theatre) is a thin sheet of material, which in normal light is semi-transperent. Scrims are generally hung from a batten in a theatre, allowing them to be moved if required. Scrims function as drapery which, when lit from the front, appears as a solid material, but when lit from behind, appears to be semi-transperent which in turn creates a silhouette effect. Scrims come in good use when objects on part of a stage are required to be hidden from the audience, and when they need to be revealed at a later time. All this can be done without physically having to move (or fly) any drapery back into the fly tower or to another position on the stage.
