Yes and no. It does not attempt to recreate a historical event or evoke a historical era. It does not purport to have the characters speak like real young people speak or ever spoke. However, the feelings, attitudes and reactions of the people in the play are very true to life, which is why it continues to be popular. In fact it is able to portray the feelings and thoughts of the characters better by having them be much much more articulate than real people are. It might be more realistic to have them say things like "Yeah, well, so, I'm like . . . well, whatever." but it would not give us any insight into their souls.
