A Parable of Immortality
by Henry Van Dyke
I am standing upon the seashore.
A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze
and starts for the blue ocean.
She is an object of beauty and strength,
and I stand and watch until at last she hangs
like a speck of white cloud
just where the sea and sky come down to mingle with each other.
Then someone at my side says,
" There she goes! "
Gone where?
Gone from my sight . . . that is all.
She is just as large in mast and hull and spar
as she was when she left my side
and just as able to bear her load of living freight
to the place of destination.
Her diminished size is in me, not in her.
And just at the moment
when someone at my side says,
" There she goes! "
there are other eyes watching her coming . . .
and other voices ready to take up the glad shout . . .
" Here she comes! "
In the minds of fishermen in the poem The Coromandel Fishers, the shore is always beautiful, with sweetness of the shade of coconut glades, scented mango groves, sea shore in moonlit nights, and the voices of their dearest ones nearby. Only that their life at sea is more thrilling and satisfying to their adventurous minds.
No Country for Old Men
"Life the hound" is a metaphor in this poem.
"A juxtaposition is when two or more things stand side by side, even though they usually are not associated with another."Here is an example for an juxtaposition in your poem:"THAT is no country for old men. The young / In one another's arms" (l.l.1)The old men stands next to the young (-> old - young)"Of what is past, or passing, or to come."I think this might be an juxtaposition, too, but I am not sure. (the past next to the future)I hope I could help you!
Carol Genyea Kaplan's (correct spelling) poem "Another Woman" was written in the late 1970's.
the poem was written after sailing to England
I think he wrote this poem after sailing from the USA to England. This is because he quotes "And that has made all the difference". So, perhaps he means that after his choosing of the road his life had taken another upturn.
Another Shore was created in 1948.
The duration of Another Shore is 1.28 hours.
In the poem "Sailing to Byzantium" by W.B. Yeats, the act of sailing to Byzantium symbolizes a journey towards spiritual and artistic fulfillment. Byzantium represents a place of timeless wisdom and beauty, and the speaker seeks to escape the limitations of old age and mortality by transcending to a realm of eternal art and culture.
