Someone wearing a mask, or someone performing in a masque. A masque was a kind of symbolic proto-musical, with lots of music and dancing and sets and costumes but not much drama.

Back then, many of the parties and occasions were mascarades, and people wore masks along with their costumes. It was just part of the style of the parties of the time.
