The poem basically emphasizes on one particular character of man. That being of a person who does not have a definite goal. One who moves from one decision to another, who changes course mid-way, who cannot decide once and for all what he wants to do and accomplish in life. He dreams a new dream everyday. He resolves afresh everyday. He has a new ambition everyday. But when circumstances don't seem in favour of his ambition, then he decides to do something else. He forgets all about his ambition, his dream. And he looks for a new one instead. If they just went straight they might go far; They are strong and brave and true; But they're always tired of the things that are, And they want the strange and new. Peruse this stanza carefully. It says if this man had one ambition and a firm decision to pursue it, he'd go far. Meaning he'd achieve it. For he has what it takes to reach his destination. But he gets tired after facing a few difficulties and he looks for new, and comparatively, easier ambitions. So this type of man does not succeed in life. Like a rolling stone gathers no moss, this nomad type of a person achieves nothing in his life. In other words, he fails. He becomes a joke. He does not fit in.

Okay. First of all, nice poem. Secondly, to me, it means this:

The poem basically emphasizes on one particular character of man. That being of a person who does not have a definite goal. The one who aren't living by society's standards and expectations and go for something exceptional because they have that special vision for the world.

If they just went straight they might go far;

They are strong and brave and true;

But they're always tired of the things that are,

And they want the strange and new.

Hope it helped! :)

The theme of the poem is all about people who don't have a fixed aim or goal for their life and their priority keeps changing. It tells us that the people/men that don't fit in are in a constant race/struggle but because their priority keeps on changing they don't win in the race and also break the hearts of their friends and family. They are like nomads who wander everywhere and are always doing mysterious and adventurous things. They are also strong and brave but they don't like things for too long and their thinking varies minute to minute. And everytime they want something new and strange. They can't find a proper company (friends to hangout with). And that is why they keep changing themselves and start all over again. But then eventually they realize that their youth has been finished and regret everything they did in the past and realize that every step they made was a mistake. And end up having no more hope and they have to admit the truth. Which is that he has failed and missed all of the chances and opportunities that he had. And now there is no point of being sad because he has missed the chances and he can't change himself or the things back, he was never meant to win, he was unwilling to do the right thing at the right time and he is one of the men who won't fit in.

It means that to succeed all the qualities of a man are useless until and unless he's persistent, doesn't take shortcuts and is patient.

the poet has made fun of the people who are inconsistent and can never wait for their turn and says that it's only those people who are consistent and hardworking who win the life-long race(succeed)
