Henry Longfellow's second wife died in a fire in the library of their home. She had the wax for letters melting and inside the envelopes were cuttings of her children's hair. She accidentally dropped the match on her dress and that is how the fire started. Longfellow tried to save her by using a rug and even himself. This only resulted in himself receiving bad scars. She passed away. He couldn't shave his beard because he was so badly burned and so he let it grow out. His first wife simply died from an illness.
