Venetian Masquerade Ball (in the original name when if first started in the fallen Republic of Veneta)
Superhero. Masquerade. Animals.
A masque is a form of aristocratic entertainment in England in the 16th and 17th centuries, originally consisting of pantomime and dancing but later including dialogue and song, presented in elaborate productions given by amateur and professional actors. A masquerade is a party, dance, or other festive gathering of persons wearing masks and other disguises, and often elegant, historical, or fantastic costumes.
Rosaline was invited to the party, so we can assume that she probably came. However she doesn't have any lines and is not mentioned in any stage directions so it is possible that she was not. Basically, this is a director's call.
The party Romeo attends is a masquerade, so everyone is wearing masks, so it is hard to tell who he is. And once someone does eventually recognize him (Tybalt) his father tells him that Romeo is just a young boy, and not a trouble maker, and that he should just let him be and not cause a scene.
Operas are a type of stage performance, which are traditionally limited to actors. Therefore, a masquerade ball wouldn't usually be held in an opera. There are, however, some operas named after masquerade balls, such as Un Ballo In Maschera.
Masquerade?
They didn't have a party it was the capulets and they had a masquerade party because Capulet had a spur of the moment idea to do a party.
A "masquerade party" is a party where everyone comes in costumes, thus masqueraded from each other. Traditionally, one would make sure their faces are covered, so you couldn't tell who is who.
