No! The trouble with hitting kids is that it doesn't teach them anything (except not to get caught)!

It depends on the age of the child, of course. With younger kids, a simple "time out" works pretty well -- the experts recommend one minute per year of age. Believe me, having to sit quietly doing nothing is pretty intense for a 5-year-old!

Older kids are ready to learn that actions have consequences. If a child doesn't put her toys away, for example, and mommy has to do it, mommy will put the toys where the child can't get them for a day or two. (And good actions should have consequences too: thanks and praise, even an extra bedtime story!)
