this poem is about a river ( water symbolizes purification. the mother mentioned is the earth. ' broken by the world" refers to men and civilization - people are trying to change the course of the river, to civilize the river and make it fit to their needs. But the rivers is coming from heaven. It inviolable, immortal, it will wash itself of all deaths. By trying to civilize the river/ nature, people will destroy themselves. River is compared to god, thus emphasizing its purifying power. river is faith.
