He was certainly an actor in some of his own plays. Whether he was a director is a matter of conjecture--as likely as not there was no one person who took on that role and everyone in the company had a hand in it. If there was only one director it was likely not Shakespeare but the leading actor, Richard Burbage.

We are not sure whether Elizabethan and Jacobean plays had directors in the sense we know them. Likely, as the author, Shakespeare supplied subtext for the actors. He may have indicated to them his intentions as to blocking, or the actors may have worked it out for themselves. In some senses, it appears likely that Shakespeare did perform some of the duties which we would now recognize as belonging to the director.

What are differences between William shakespeare and arthur miller?

Shakespeare's scripts consist of the lines and a few stage directions. Miller wrote long and detailed instructions on how the set was to look, what the costumes were like and so on. Miller wanted to be the director as well as the playwright--Shakespeare left those details to the people actually producing the play.

Who of the craftsmen Is In charge of rehearsals?

In modern theatre, the stage manager is in charge of rehearsals, under the direction of the director. In Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream, Peter Quince appears to be both stage manager and director. And he is also the author of the play! This kind of multitasking in offstage roles is pretty common in amateur theatre.

Do Brutus and Portia kiss in Julius Caesar?

No. I suppose this is up to the individual director of a performance, who could make them kiss if he/she wanted to, but Shakespeare himself never wrote a stage direction for Brutus and Portia to kiss.

Who is the director of Shakespeare's in the park Othello?

The New York Shakespeare Festival, now called The Public Theater, calls its performances of Shakespeare in Central Park, "Shakespeare in the Park" although that name is used for outdoor Shakespeare productions around the world. NYSF put on Othello in 1964 with James Earl Jones in the title role. It would appear that Joseph Papp (the push behind the company) was the director, although the references are not clear.
