Money. Writing plays was part of his job as a partner in his theatre company. He wrote his long poems Venus and Adonis and The Rape of Lucrece to be published and sold, and Venus and Adonis sold well and kept Shakespeare in money when the theatres were closed for plague in 1593-4. His reason for writing the sonnets is less clear. Francis Meres called them "his sugared sonnets among his private friends," suggesting that he wrote them not intending them for sale but only for his friends' pleasure. It is of course possible that some of his sonnets might have been commissioned, in the same way as we let someone else write the poetry in greeting cards.
