Well that depends on the time you are basing your question on. recently, i have been set a homework to fulfill the question of "what happened during the 17th and 18th century plays?". i have found many things but they all relate back to women. the thing is that women were used as housewives and the men were the only people in theatre. this was until recently when women were used to play female roles except witched and old women. this was carried on and progressed since then. :)
Thanks xx
(please remember that i am only 12 yrs old) :)

No women were not allowed to perform. Men were made to play women parts and dressed up as girls.
Women were not allowed to preform at any theatre in Shakespeare's time. Women first appeared on stage in England after 1660.
Yes. Women were not "allowed" to perform on stage
no this was also during king James rain
no they weren't they would say that it would be unseemly for a woman to undertake such a profession

It isn't clear when women began being allowed to perform in other cultures. It is in dispute whether they were allowed to act in Greek Theater. But, in India they were allowed to perform starting early in the post Christ era (CE). However, women were not allowed on the British stage until the mid 1600s. This was a result of King Charles II's experiences while in exile in other European countries. So, the presumption is women were acting earlier in these other countries, perhaps France.
Men played womens roles in greek theatre and, all of the men wore masks, women hardly came out of the house let alone do a play in the theatre.

No. Women in Ancient civilizations had no great part in their communities. Since theater was a great part of their lives women could not take part in this activity along with many other things we take for granted today.

During Shakespeare's time, women were not allowed to act on the stage due to societal norms that dictated women should not perform publicly. In addition, there were also laws and religious restrictions in place prohibiting women from participating in theater, so men had to portray female roles in all productions.
Young men. By law women weren't allowed to perform.
