Frederik Willem deKlerk (born 1936) was the last State President of South Africa, under whom the system of apartheid (racial segregation) was for the most part abolished.

During his tenure from 1989 to 1994, Nelson Mandela (1918-2013) was released from prison, and eventually succeeded deKlerk as President.
