Shakespeare's life can be divided by where he lived: in Stratford (1564-1585), in London (1590-1613) and back in Stratford (1613-1616). The period between 1585 and 1590 or so is called the "Lost Years" because we have no idea where he was living.

The most famous historical plays and comedies were written in this period. 3. Late Middle Period, 1600 to 1608. The famous tragedies and darker comedies were written in this period. 4. Late Period, 1608 to 1612. Notable for the "Romances" and collaborations with John Fletcher. However, different people may have slightly different ideas as to the exact dates, or which plays fall into which periods. It is not an exact science.
