What kind of messages do you get in folk songs?

Folk singers can compose any kind of songs they like, having any kind of messages they like. In the 1960's, there were a lot of anti-war folk songs, but there were also some pro-war folk songs (i.e. "the Ballad of the Green Berets"). Many folk songs are about the lives of the people who composed them, rather than being about large philosophical issues. Folk music can be religious, such as "Amazing Grace" (as sung by Judy Collins for example) or anti-religious, such as "The Canons of Christianity" by Phil Ochs.
