Hmm...

I suppose that the disadvantages of poetry would be that you don't always get the full picture of the scene or emotion being described. Novels offer more background, more characterization... definitely more plot. That is what they are about.

Another disadvantage might be that they are hard to write well. Almost anyone, with a little coaching, can write a good description of a character or an object... but not so with poetry. Even though the form is as short as a description, it is harder to perfect. ... It isn't harder than writing the whole novel, of course, but it is harder than writing any other equally short piece. Takes more time, more thought, and a more artistic touch.

I love poetry, of course, so I don't see that many disadvantages to it. ... Maybe it is easier for people to take advantage of newbie poets. There are a lot of websites that will tell them they are good and ask them to buy things, when they don't even evaluate quality... they just tell everyone that. Some good coaching would be a lot better than taking advantage of them... but they just keep sending letters saying they've won this or that, and do they want to buy this other thing?

The only other one I can think of is that poetry is harder for people to understand sometimes, and a lot more people are anti-poetry than anti-novel, say, so your audience might be smaller... although, I don't know... pretty sweet audience, despite the size.

The disadvantages of reading Shakespeare, as opposed to listening to or watching his plays, are that you do not have the assistance of an actor to help you understand the lines, or to hear the rhythms of the poetry, the assonances, rhymes and alliterations of the words. Unless you have a very good theatrical imagination (which generally requires some training), it is difficult to imagine how the play might be staged. The plays give very little clue as to costume or set, how the characters move or look.

Reading plays requires a lot more imagination than reading novels or stories. Unless you have that imagination, you are going to get lost just reading them.
