Why do you think Elizabethan plays were performed during the afternoon in an open courtland?

There are at least some contemporary images of the exterior of theatres and one image of the inside of the Swan theatre. There are also archaeological findings (the foundations of the Rose and Globe theatres) as well as contracts for the construction of the Fortune playhouse in 1600. From all of these sources, we can deduce that the large public playhouses in the Elizabethan era were open to the elements and that their lighting was natural sunlight. Obviously, then, the plays were performed during the day. In fact Thomas Platter, a Swiss tourist visiting London in 1599 said in his diary that the plays commenced at 2 p.m.

What Elizabethan attractions where there in Shakespeare's time?

For the first thirty-nine years of Shakespeare's life, all of the attractions he might find in England were "Elizabethan". Working as he did in the red light district of Southwark, I daresay he found some attractions during the Elizabethan Era.

What time of day were plays usually performed in Elizabethan theaters?

Plays were performed at three o'clock in the afternoon when they were performed in a circular open air theater. There was not sufficient lighting to hold plays for large audiences indoors at night during the late 16th and early 17th centuries. They could and did perform for smaller audiences at night indoors at court, at people's homes, at public halls, and at indoor theatres like the Blackfriars. Because the audiences had to be smaller, indoor theatres' ticket prices were much higher than those at the large public outdoor theatres. Shakespeare attests to this procedure in A Midsummer Night's Dream, where Pyramus and Thisbe is performed on an indoor stage in "the three hours between after-supper and bed-time".

How many theatres were in London during Shakespeare's time?

Theatres were constantly being built and being destroyed so the number changed from time to time. The Theatre was closed in 1596 and taken down in 1599 when its parts were used to build The Globe in a different part of London. The Rose was an older and smaller theatre which had been partly expanded. The Admiral's Men, who played there, built the much larger Fortune theatre and moved, which led to the decline of the Rose and its eventual demolition. The Globe burned down in 1613 and was not rebuilt until the next year. Some of the theatres which were around in Shakespeare's time were The Theatre, The Curtain, The Rose, The Swan, The Globe, The Fortune, The Hope (or bear garden), Newington Butts, the Blackfriars (there were actually two theatres by this name at different times), and St. Paul's. There were also a number of innyards used regularly for plays (4 or 5 that we know the names of).

What were some common beliefs during the Elizabethan era?

Many superstitions during the Elizabethan period dated back to traditions and beliefs from much earlier times. The superstitions were also steeped in the belief in old magic and the mystical properties of animals and herbs. Elizabethan superstitions also related to special chants, omens and names and numbers. Many traditional English customs are based on the mythical relationship to superstitions dating back to the Dark Ages and even further back to the Romans and their Gods and Goddesses.

What audience went to Shakespeare's plays?

The audiences who attended theatres in Elizabethan London comprised a large section of the population. Anyone who could pay a penny could get into the large public theatres, so everyone from the poor apprentices to tradesmen to merchants to the minor nobility showed up. The extremely rich, including royalty, did not go to the public theatres but they watched the plays anyway by hiring the theatre companies to perform for them privately. Of course the audience also included those people who were trying to make some money out of the other patrons: food and drink sellers, pickpockets and prostitutes.
