poetry/prose is its own genre. Poetry is different from Prose... but it is its own genre. If you are at the bookstore, poetry will have its own section. All the rest of the categories will be Prose.

Subgenres of Poetry include: Lyric, Narrative, Prose, Epic, Dramatic, Satirical, Elegy, Verse Fable, Speculative, Language, Performance and Slam, Cowboy Poetry, Liturgical, Tragedy, Comedy, Ode, Pastoral, Sonnet, Ballad, Blank Verse, Choral, Couplet, Free Verse, Limerick, Rondeau, and Nursery Rhyme.

Most poetry can be divided into poetry that has a formal structure and poetry that doesn't (which is free verse). There are a LOT of styles under the Formal structure side... sonnet is one of many. There are Haikus, Diamantes, ... really, a lot.

Some people think that all poetry rhymes, but it doesn't. In response, some people even divide poetry into rhyming and not rhyming, although this division is similar to the above, because (most) free verse doesn't rhyme.

Under free verse there are a lot of styles as well, usually dependent on author.

Some people subdivide it into theme... such as love poems, anti-war poems, etc.

No matter whose list you use of sub-genres, some of it seems to get missed. Where do you put things like found poetry, or geometric poetry, or ladder poetry, or other poems that don't always have a name, but are written in a certain way for school assignments? Some of it is usually found more under art categories than literature... but they are all types of poetry.
