The stomp dance was and is the primary dance among traditional Cherokees and other southeastern tribes. It is done around the sacred fire, with a male song leader and female shell shakers. Normally only the men sing. The songs are ancient 'call and answer' songs. Unlike modern powwow dances, the stomp dance is done counter-clockwise and can go on all night.
Forced relocations of tribal members caused many of the "purely Cherokee" dances to become diluted with other tribe's dances. Tribal traditions reflect this and historical books were made after the fact in most cases so are not reliable for ancient dances. Examples of this are: Pow-Wow, the Cherokee's never held pow-wows (until modern times) Pow-Wow is another tribes word for "Spirit Leader". All tribes held gatherings of some type, these gatherings were spiritual and communal in nature and almost always included some form of dance. In modern times you can find a "Cherokee" at a "pow-wow" doing dances such as:
Stomp Dance (a welcome dance)
Green Corn Dance
Fancy Dance (The one dance that most world wide would recognize).
(Just to name a few).
