John Shakespeare (1531-1601) was a glover, and a leather worker. Between 1569 and 1564, he also became a local official, in the positions of constable, collector, burgess, chamberlain, and finally alderman. Unfortunately he lost his position over some questionable dealings and loans.

He and his wife Mary Arden had 8 children, the third being their oldest son, William.
