Shakespeare is considered one of the greatest poets and playwrights in the world. He wrote over thirty plays, more than a dozen of which are considered world classics, constantly being performed in revivals. He wrote two narrative poems while the theaters were forcibly closed due to plague, and over the course of his adult life he wrote a cycle of over one hundred and fifty sonnets, which are considered among the best of the genre. During his lifetime he also managed to achieve success in business. Not only was he a shareholder (partner) in the acting troupe for which he both acted and wrote, but was also a shareholder in the playhouses in which they performed: the Globe, and Blackfriars. With the money he made in the theater and from generous gifts from patrons, he bought the second largest house in his home town of Stratford, possibly as his retirement home, and leased a suite of apartments (what today we would call a condo) in London next door to his Blackfriars playhouse. During his lifetime, he was acknowledged as a great writer and died a wealthy man.
