All video projectors have limitations on the distance from the screen. The question is impossible to answer as all projectors are different. However, every projector manufacturer publishes data to calculate the distance from the screen for any given screen size. They also have data to calculate the height of the projector relative to the screen. It is always safe to select a projector before fixing a position for it. Fixing the distance first can restrict the range of projectors available without good cause. Some more expensive projector have interchangeable lenses and allow a wide range of projection positions. These projectors will be high end projectors and will generally have a price tag of $10000 or more. The height of the projector was mentioned above. This is an important consideration because getting the height correct will allow best quality. Most projectors have keystone adjustment that is electronic. If the height is not quite correct, the adjustment will distort the image on the LCD panel so that it becomes square on the screen. To do this, the image is resized and that process will always reduce the image quality slightly. Getting the height right will avoid the resize.
