In this day and age, you can get by with just about anything, but if you don't want to embarrass your date, a sport coat should be considered minimally acceptable attire. Suits are common, and tuxs are not unusual. But, hey…if you enjoy Opera and all you have is a pair of Levis…go for it!
There is no dress code for the opera but a nice dress or suit and tie are very common. Typically it is best to dress well for the Opera. Some people come wearing jeans which many patrons would consider a dishonor to the production.
For Phantom live, I saw it on Broadway with my mom. Unless it is an opening night, you could wear pretty much anything. It is always best when you're going to any theatre to dress up a little bit. Not full dress/suit but perhaps a nice shirt, pants, and shoes. It's not best to look like you just walked out of bed. I saw it on Broadway and it was just a semi formal kind of event. People do not expect a huge ordeal, and they prefer it. No one wants to look over a large hat.
If it is an opening night in your area, then it is best to dress up even a bit more. Perhaps a nice dress/work suit. There is no need for a large black tie kind of outfit. Overall, make it a little more dressy. It's always more fun as well. It builds up anticipation when you go see it if you do dress up a bit. It's worth the anticipation.
You want to wear something dressy but not uncomfortable. If the clothes are good, no matter what the style, they'll be comfortable, anyway. It's best to go with something dignified but not stuffy.
It would seem to be 'informal' dress - the link below is their home page.
