The bright red means hate. The big clue is at the end when Maria tells everybody that they killed because of hate, and points to her bright red dress saying that she now has hate too.
In "West Side Story," the song "Cool" is performed after a tense fight between the Jets and Sharks. The characters express the need to maintain composure and control in the face of escalating violence and conflict. "Be cool" becomes a mantra, urging them to suppress their emotions and act tough to survive in their harsh environment. This reflects the broader themes of the musical, emphasizing the struggles of youth and the consequences of gang rivalry.
When Nick refers to the story as one of "the West," he highlights themes of exploration, ambition, and the complexities of American identity often associated with Western narratives. This implies a larger commentary on the cultural and historical context of the West, emphasizing how individual experiences reflect broader societal issues. It suggests that the personal experiences within the story resonate with the mythos of the American West, including its challenges and aspirations.

Do you mean West as in Western World? or West as in West Side NY? Interestingly enough, the early drafts of the show were called East Side Story, and involved the angst between Catholic and Jew rather than American and Puerto Rican. The title changed as well as the idea for the gangland clashes, and I guess the area of the upper west side in NY in the 50s was a boiling pot for gangs and territorial supremacy as Puerto Ricans moved into the area. The story could feasibly be based anywhere in the world, changing the characters to reflect the local demographic, but being based in New York the writers must have felt more of an affinity for their immediate surroundings.
